Healthy Eating = Healthy Teeth

We all know that what you eat can have a direct impact on your overall health, but recently there have been studies showing that what you eat can also have a positive (or negative) impact on your oral health. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry has compiled a recipe book that features delicious recipes using key ingredients proven to improve the health of your smile.

The free e-booklet includes recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and dessert.  It also includes tips on what foods aren’t as beneficial for your teeth, like soda or dried fruits (too much sugar, read our recent blog entry).

The recipes were compiled by Dr. Shawn Frawley, AACD member, Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist and gourmet cook and Karen Krchma, a nutritionist and health coach.  Together, they created healthy, easy-to-make recipes and helpful tips. For example, did you know pineapple could act as a natural teeth whitener? Or that shitake mushrooms contain a sugar that prevents mouth bacteria from growing?

bookAccording to Dr. Frawley, “The teeth and gums mirror what’s going on in the rest of the body. Therefore, what you consume influences the health of your smile. That’s why it’s important to think carefully about making the right food choices.”
